A family’s pet fish is being blamed for a deadly fire that nearly killed the family. Investigators believe Kipper, an eight inch catfish, nearly cost a woman and her two daughters their lives.

According to The Sun, the reigning notion is that Kipper was probably fighting with a rival in their tank. Thereby allowing water to splash out of the aquarium, landing on an electric plug below.Which is believed to have sent a power surge up the tank’s light cable, which burnt the plastic lid, which melted and dripped onto a leather sofa that burst into flames.

The ensuing blaze burned as Sharron Killahena, 25, and kids Nicole, six, and Kerry, two, slept upstairs. Luckily a smoke alarm woke landlord Simon Justice, 25, who was sleeping in a different room, who woke the family just in time to escape.

The family lost their home and six beloved fish however Killahena says, “At least we are here to tell the tale.”

The Neuköllner Opera House in Berlin, Germany is encouraging its audience to smoke cannabis while watching a play about drugs.

According to reports the opera house wants the public to “enhance the psychedelic experience of Camille Saint-Saens’ drug opera, “The Oriental Princess.”

Performers of the play will also smoke pot onstage while the audience smokes their own brand of herbs.

Artistic director Bernhard Glocksin argues the audience will have a different experience smoking pot while watching the play and that the opera experience will be “improved with a few joints.”

He said the opera house asserts artistic license will be protected from drug laws.

He said, “It’s a test to see just what we can get away with.”

Possession of up to 10 grams of cannabis in Berlin is considered “for personal use,” and authorities usually don’t make arrests if someone is caught with such a small amount of pot.

However, smoking pot in public places is illegal.

A Conewago Township woman on Monday admitted to smoking marijuana every day with her 13-year-old son to reward him for completing his homework. Amanda Lynn Livelsberger, 30, pleaded guilty to seven charges and will be sentenced later in November.

During a hearing at the Adams County court, Livelsberger admitted that she had been smoking marijuana with her son since he was 11, and that she often smoked with him as a reward.

According to court documents obtained by the Evening Sun, the boy had told police that as soon as he got back from school, he was required to do his homework in exchange for permission to smoke marijuana with his mother.

Livelsberger also admitted smoking marijuana with two of her son’s friends, ages 17 and 18, police said.

Livelsberger pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of corruption of minors, possession with intent to deliver drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of a small amount of marijuana with intent to distribute. Her plea did not stipulate a sentence.

If a local ballot initiative passes in Eureka Springs this November, people can smoke the green, green grass of home and not be in the jailhouse now.

To the surprise of pot enthusiasts statewide, local leaders of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws have been able to gather enough signatures in this Bible Belt, small tourist economy based town, to put on the election ballot a proposed change in the catagory for minor marijuana offences.

Under current law, first time offenders caught with 1 ounce or less of marijuana in Arkansas can get up to 1 year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both. If this initiative passes, pot possession of 1 ounce or less will be akin to a minor traffic violation, punishable by community service or drug counseling.

But even the pro-pot people are not lighting up in celebration yet. Many in Eureka Springs say they are unhappy about their town being in the vanguard of marijuana leniency while Arkansas is battling a major methamphetamine problem. The local police say which ever way the voters go won’t matter because state laws governing marijuana possession trump local ordinances. The state of Arkansas has nothing on statewide ballots to change marijuana laws.

“A lot of people here don’t see anything wrong with marijuana, but it’s against the law to posses it in Arkansas. Until they change the state law, we’re going to uphold it,” Sgt. Shelley Summers of the Eureka Springs Police Department told the L A Times.

Kieth Strop, who founded NORML in 1970 told the newspaper,”although police can ignore the will of the people, I’m not sure they will want to.”

Stroup also said, “If the initiative passes, a majority of residents will be saying that law enforcement resources should be spent on more serious crime. If the mayor and other city leaders don’t understand that, the town can vote in people who do.”

Eureka Springs has a population of 2,278. Located in a remote hollow in the northwest Arkansas hills the town has a mixture of traditional conservative Christians and aging hippies.
